Chip Mates cereal box redesignby *MichaelMayne

Did this... oh... almost two years ago? Or at least over a year ago.
Class assignment. We had to take an already existing product and redesign (and hopefully improve upon) the original design of the packaging.

Chip Mates cereal is, if you couldn't tell, Kroger's cheaper version of Cookie Crisp. The original box art looks pretty hellish. But the cereal tastes the same as Cookie Crisp, so I'd buy it all the time at college for snack food. [link]

The one thing the original box has going for it I think is the sailor's chart in the background. But part of my "improvement" was to make the main images on the front bigger. With that done, there wasn't much room for anything else, and mocking up a background map would have simply overcrowded things, I thought. So I just stuck with the bigger images and slightly more saturated browns and more of a touch of blue.

<s>This happened to be totally coincidence, but I think I turned Chester into merely a pirate version of one of the Rice Krispies elves... oh well.</s> (Meh, never mind. Just checked out the RK guys; not too much of a similarity.) I didn't really bother with character design on this; I just wanted to punch up the artwork. Used the Windwaker art style as an inspiration for the lineart.

And the maze is just some randomly generated thing I got off some website. Truth be told, I don't remember what was on the back of the real box, but it looked just about as fugly as the original front.

All the text (save for the stuff on the back) is just taken verbatim from the original box. Tried to find a template for the Nutrition Facts, but to no avail, so that was a burden to mock up.

But I rather like how it all turned out. Would have been cool if I could have actually printed it out, on cardboard especially.

Like your redesign more. Seems to have more personality than the original. Better than the other mascots like Lucky and Trix rabbit. This kid seems to have a take my cereal and I'll slit your throat attitude so cool.

BTW did you see the recent Nostalgia Critic video with him detailing the best cereal mascots? It was fun.
